Ice Cave Season in Iceland: When to Go (October–April)
Ice Cave Season in Iceland: When to Go (October–April)
Short answer
Ice cave season in Iceland, with Glacier Travel, runs from October to the end of April.
If you want to visit a natural blue ice cave with us from Jökulsárlón, book between October and the end of April. With Glacier Travel, ice cave season in Iceland runs from October to the end of April, when the caves are stable enough to visit. Tours are subject to weather and ice conditions on the day, and booking in advance is recommended in peak winter months. Tours run across the full season, subject to weather and ice conditions on the day.
What each part of the season feels like
Natural ice caves are not permanent. They form and change each winter as meltwater, cold weather and glacier movement reshape the ice. The cave visited is chosen for safety and conditions at the time.
October and November: early season
Early season suits an autumn trip. New winter caves are being assessed and the cave visited is selected for safety. Daylight is generally longer than in the darkest mid-winter weeks. Expect changeable weather and let conditions decide the final plan.
December, January and February: mid-winter
Mid-winter brings the darkest days and typically the coldest feel: snow around the lagoon, low light and blue ice — the classic winter experience. Strong weather can affect travel, so build in flexibility, dress warmly and allow extra time for winter roads.
March and April: late season
Late season generally brings longer daylight while tours are still running, without the darkest mid-winter days. The cave visited is still chosen for safety. The season ends at the end of April — the last chance until October.
Why the season ends after April
As temperatures rise and meltwater increases, caves change quickly and can become unsafe or disappear. A solid winter cave may flood or break up. Conditions — not the calendar alone — decide whether a cave can be entered, so the season ends at the end of April.

What if the weather or conditions cancel your tour?
Icelandic weather and glacier conditions can change fast. If the cave planned for the day is not safe, that decision comes first — even if the sky at the parking lot looks fine. Conditions on and inside the glacier are what matter.
