Crystal vs Extreme Blue Ice Cave Tour: Which Should You Book?
Planning an ice cave tour in Iceland, the choice is often how long and how adventurous you want the day to be. Glacier Travel runs two blue ice cave tours — Crystal and Extreme — which suit different travellers, fitness levels and amounts of time.
I am Vigfús Ásbjörnsson, owner and lead guide at Glacier Travel. I am local to this area, we have been operating ice cave tours since 2015, and I am AIMG Hard Ice 1 & 2 and Ice Cave certified, and Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certified.

The short answer
Choose Crystal if you want a focused ice cave experience in about 3 hours, for 23,900 ISK, departing from the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon parking lot. It runs from October to the end of April.
Choose Extreme if you want a longer, more physical day — 4.5 to 6 hours for 36,900 ISK — combining a glacier hike with an ice cave visit, and you have moderate fitness.
Both tours only visit natural ice caves. Glacier Travel visits natural ice caves in the Vatnajökull area on tours from Jökulsárlón, from October to the end of April. We do not visit man-made ice tunnels.
What is the Crystal Blue Ice Cave Adventure?
The Crystal tour lasts around 3 hours and costs 23,900 ISK. It runs from October to the end of April and departs from the Jökulsárlón parking lot — please arrive 20 minutes early. Helmets, crampons and head lights are included. Bring warm clothing, gloves, hiking shoes and your camera.
This suits most first-time visitors: travel to the cave, put on the safety gear we provide, and spend time inside the blue ice with your guide. It also fits easily into a south-coast travel day.

What is the Extreme Blue Ice Cave Tour?
The Extreme tour lasts 4.5 to 6 hours and costs 36,900 ISK. It combines a glacier hike with an ice cave visit, so you spend more time on the glacier itself, and requires moderate fitness. Helmets, crampons, head lights, harness, ice axes and carabiners are included.

Which ice cave tour is for you?
Book Crystal if: you have limited time, this is your first ice cave tour, or you want the blue ice cave itself to be the focus of a shorter outing. At ~3 hours and 23,900 ISK from Jökulsárlón, it is a complete ice cave experience without committing most of your day.
Book Extreme if: you want a longer adventure and moderate fitness is no problem. At 4.5–6 hours and 36,900 ISK, you combine a glacier hike with the ice cave, with harness, ice axes and carabiners included alongside helmets, crampons and head lights.
Still unsure? “The cave, in a focused trip” points to Crystal. “As much glacier time as possible” points to Extreme.
